Salt Lake City Brown Berets
www.myspace.com/brownberetslc
In 1967, young Chicanas and Chicanos from the barrios of East Los Angeles came together and established the Brown Berets in order to address issues that were impacting their communities negatively. The Brown Berets fought against police harassment, inadequate public schools and education, the lack of political representation and the Vietnam War draft. The Brown Berets became a symbol of resistance and hope within the Chicana and Chicano community and flourished throughout the barrios of Aztlan. Influenced by the legacy of this organization and similar conditions that existed in the 60s, a group of Salt Lake City students decided to reactivate the Brown Berets in 2006. With the actions that took place on April 9th, 10th and May 1st, the Brown Berets of Salt Lake City has established itself. We stand in full solidarity with the Brown Berets of Dallas, Watsonville, Modesto, South Central L.A. We also support local groups like the Socialist Action, UCLR, and others. We hope to grow and be able to make a progressive change for the safety of our children, schools and barrios. We welcome anybody who is against the oppression and exploitation of any people. We are driven not by hate of others, but by love for our people.
